It all began after the lecture on saluting. Porky Binns clenched his fist and slapped Bluey on the arm. “Got it, mate,” he enthused. “Bloody well got a good idea. You know how Weymssie told us that salutin’ was a mutual greetin’, well I was just thinkin’ ..,” “..Don’t strain the brain,” mumbled Smodger, hat [...]

We have all heard the title being used by others; and, may have used it ourselves. Using this expression certainly invokes a “homey” feeling in the user. The real problem with use of this expression in communicating with others is that, as I intend to demonstrate here, what you mean by “home” and what I [...]

“Home” means different things to each of us, and our homes differ to an extraordinary degree. In my lifetime I have been in many homes other than my own: friends and neighbors, business associates, relatives, girlfriends etc., and I have always been struck by their distinctive characteristics. Sometimes it is just a matter of design [...]

Have you ever said, “Never say never?”  I suppose that many of us have uttered (or shouted) these words. Why would anyone with any useful experience in this world ever say such words?  I suspect that it is another way to urge a companion on to some kind of victory without any risk to the [...]

‘Hello is this the Johannesburg Funeral Home?’
‘Ya’
‘My Name is Mrs. Beatrice Van- der -Watt and I am phoning from Australia.’
‘From Australia, my, my that is a long way away, my friend. How can I be of help to you?’ said the African sounding voice at the other end of the phone.
‘My Mother has just died and I want you to cremate her.’

‘Oh dear me, I don’t think I could go all the way to Australia to cremate your mother. Can’t you find a funeral director there to do it? I don’t like flying?’

Joey and Eddy Dellaro started building the place in late ’47. I’d check their progress each night, make a note of any problems and show them the list next day. They’d scan through the list, shaking their heads. “What can I say?” one of them would offer by way of apology. “All the guys we [...]

“And I’m never coming back! Never! Never!” The glass shuddered as the door slammed. Gladys Thompson, primly pruning her roses, peeped over her fence to see her neighbour’s teenage daughter storm down the front path. “Oh dear!” Gladys gave a small elegant shrug.” Things were never like that when she was a girl. She could [...]

Early October, 1918 and life was a tad easier in our little section of France. Corporal Ted Never – pronounced Neever, had been tasked with leading a patrol to ascertain German movements in preparation for the so-called big push. We ‘ad just come back from a patrol an’ we were lined up in front of [...]

My brother Pete and his best mates, Benjy, Luke and James had been inseparable since kindergarten. Whether playing, studying, wagging school or hiking, they thought as one, their teamwork extraordinary. The boys were between six and seven years of age when I arrived on the scene; a novelty at first but, all too soon, I [...]

“There’s No Place Like Home.” I was a littlie of just four summers when I saw Glinda The Good Witch Of The South (Billie Burke) say those words to Dorothy (Judy Garland), in the marvellous pic The Wizard Of Oz. Call me an old sentimental, but it is my favourite movie. It’s a wonderful expression [...]
